Glasgow firms will be told of the potentially lucrative business opportunities which lie in the Far East at a networking event being held to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
The Glasgow Chamber of Commerce event is being held at The Tall Ship (The SV Glenlee) on the banks of the River Clyde this Tuesday evening, with Chinese food provided by Encore Hospitality Services.
Recognising the Chinese New Year (which falls on Sunday) and the importance of Chinese markets globally, more than 50 Chamber members will hear from Vince Cunningham, of China Britain Business Council, who will discuss how to break into this fast growing, yet highly competitive market.
The UK and Chinese governments have an agreement to undertake £60 billion of bilateral trade in 2010 while, according to Scottish Government figures, Scottish exports to China in 2008 were £295 million.
Richard Muir, Commercial Director of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “This unique evening provides a great opportunity for our members to explore the opportunities and benefits of trading with China, which in itself is a huge market.
“The fact it is being staged at such a fantastic and unique venue as The SV Glenlee, combined with the finest Chinese food being provided by Encore, means it will offer a perfect and relaxed backdrop against which to further develop contacts through networking.”
The event begins with a drinks reception, followed by Vince Cunningham’s talk, then some case studies of Chamber members with business links in China, before being rounded off by a Chinese cultural celebration.
In August last year Encore Hospitality Services took over as catering provider at The SV Glenlee, which transported goods throughout the world in her former life as a cargo ship.
Ian Boardley, hospitality services manager for Encore, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce to provide a stunning venue, food and drinks for what should be a terrific evening of celebration and networking.”
